韦文浩（刘锡明饰）生于小康之家，亚洲祖父韦应昌望子成龙，亚洲促成其父韦玉冠娶祥呈公主，岂料公主病逝，从此家道中落，受尽白眼。 后文浩结识了潦倒词人周帮彦，结为知己，受帮彦熏陶，发奋向上，终踏足官场。文浩有一好友高俅为攀附端王（张兆辉饰），不惜出卖文浩，后更夺去其青梅竹马的女友念妈，文浩受打击之余，性格渐变质以求显达。文浩有一婢仆楚明珠（邵美琪饰），两人初为斗气冤家，后明珠发现文浩亦有纯良之一面，对他改观，二人渐生情愫，但文浩为了重振家声，未用情。 帮彦与名妓李师师（谢宁饰）相恋，但自觉潦倒半生，身无长物下聘，故未敢迎娶师师。此时端王登基是为徽宗，文浩讨徽宗欢心，安排师师献唱，徽宗惊为天人，召师师入宫，后得知帮彦与师师相恋，下令杀帮彦，面对友情，荣禄，文浩如何取舍！
